Each spring, downtown St. Petersburg transforms into one of the most unique venues in American motorsport. City streets become a professional racing circuit, grandstands rise along the waterfront, and thousands of fans gather around the temporary course for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

The 2026 race weekend ran from February 27 through March 1, opening the new NTT INDYCAR SERIES season on the Streets of St. Petersburg. The event once again turned the downtown waterfront into a high speed street circuit that blends world class racing with one of Florida’s most recognizable city backdrops.

For three days, the area surrounding the marina, Albert Whitted Airport, and the downtown street grid became the center of motorsports in North America.

A Street Circuit in the Heart of the City

The St. Petersburg track is a temporary 1.8 mile street circuit with 14 turns that winds through the downtown waterfront. Portions of the course run along city streets while other sections pass beside Albert Whitted Airport and the marina.

Street circuits create a unique challenge for drivers and teams. Unlike permanent racetracks, the surface evolves throughout the weekend as rubber builds on the asphalt and concrete. Grip levels change with each session, making practice and qualifying critical preparation for race day.

The result is a race that rewards precision and patience. A small mistake can end a lap or even the entire race.

Qualifying Sets the Grid

Saturday’s qualifying session determined the starting order for Sunday’s race. Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin secured pole position for the event after posting the fastest lap during the final qualifying round.

Street circuits like St. Petersburg make qualifying especially important. Passing opportunities are limited, so track position often determines race strategy before the green flag even waves.

Palou Opens the Season With a Victory

When the checkered flag waved on Sunday, Álex Palou captured the win in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Palou completed the 100 lap race to take the victory at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, earning an early lead in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship standings.
